What makes a home rich in character?

By Katie Harris

What makes a home rich in character?

Whether it’s a flight of handcrafted timber stairs or a striking marble benchtop, unique design is the key to a character-rich home.

It could be a fine detail or something more large-scale, an old heritage element or a more contemporary touch. There are many ways design can add an authentic sense of identity and vibrancy to a home.

“The types of features that can add character to a home come in many different styles and aesthetics,” explains Bianca Baldi, associate at Technē Architecture + Interior Design.

“For example, heritage characters that feel genuine and authentic to the home add a historic aspect to any space. Natural elements – stones, timbers, bricks, handmade tiles – enhance the overall aesthetic and ambience of a space and create timeless beauty.

”Patterns, lighting, soft furnishings and colours can also make a dramatic difference.

“We’re seeing a lot of stripes and checked elements in a big way in tiled floors and walls; this can add a nostalgic character to the home,” Baldi says.

“Lighting a space strategically can really enrich a space – the combination of dimmable lighting and a mixture of lamps provides versatility and control over the lighting scheme.

“We’re also seeing more tonal paint colours that would spread across all walls, ceilings, skirtings – soft and warm greys and creams and balanced with something striking like stone or timber walls or joinery.”

The design team behind a new Sydney development has drawn on a suite of rich details to create a collection of luxury apartments.

The Centennial Collection by developer Stargate Property is located on the edge of Centennial Park in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. The 270-degree panoramic harbour, city skyline and parkside views enjoyed from this prime position have proved to be a source of inspiration for designers at SJB.

Across the two 10-storey buildings, architect Adam Haddow and interior designer Victoria Judge have produced a series of elegantly styled apartments bathed in natural light.

The Centennial Collection is located on the edge of Sydney’s Centennial Park.

Demand for apartments at The Centennial Collection has been so strong, the first stage of the development has already sold out, says Marcello Bo, director at Ray White Projects.

“It’s unlike any other project in the area in terms of the design, the layout and the views,” he says. “Every apartment has a wraparound balcony and has amazing views.”

The interior design has been crafted with high-end materials such as rose-gold tapware and white stone or timber floors. These statement pieces are complemented by the impressive amenities found within The Centennial Collection.

“In terms of finishes, buyers can choose from a selection of beautiful imported Italian marble, Swiss appliances from V-ZUG and floor-to-ceiling glass to take full advantage of the amazing city skyline, harbour, opera house and Centennial Park views,” Bo says.

The Centennial Collection apartments have been crafted with high-end materials.

“Another amazing feature of this project is the incredible rooftop area with an entertaining, barbecue space and rooftop swimming pool.”

Of course, individual style plays an important role in creating a character-filled home.

Personal touches can instantly transform a blank slate-space to a home that says something about the owner, while also making them feel at ease. These additions can include artworks, furniture, antiques and collectibles.

Discerning buyers are always on the lookout for homes embracing bold design themes while also giving residents room to stamp their own brand.
